There are several athletic sports being played in colleges and universities all the time. The major ones are usually football, basketball and baseball. In fact, basketball is one of the biggest college sports out there and is famous for it’s “March Madness” every year. This is when a tournament takes place between the different colleges to crown one as its best.

In order to really appreciate the sport, you must know college basketball basics. Learning about the sport can take some time, so don’t get frustrated if you don’t know every minor detail, just focus on understanding the rules and some basic skills of the sport so you can appreciate the mastery of these young students over their sport. From there, knowing how good these players are and how effectively they play, you will be much more appreciative of the effort they have put in. Once you can appreciate the effort, you can take delight in how well they execute plays and dominate the court.

Familiarizing yourself with the rules can be simple, just reading a Wikipedia entry alone can set up the foundation as they do explain it well. But to be brief, two teams of five players dribble the ball and try to score one another. Particular attention should be paid to infractions and fouls you can commit, as they are often called and you don’t want to be left wondering why the game play just got interrupted. Once you know the general rules and scoring that is involved, you can move on to learning some of the basic strategies that are employed.

Much like in any other team sport, there is a role for each player. Learning what each role is responsible for and what they are attempting to accomplish will lead you to know more about each player that takes on one of those roles. This also lets you appreciate each player for what they are especially skilled at. You may not otherwise know the value of a defensive player when you compare it to the easy to spot skill of a high scoring player. For all the worth of a star player, it is a team sport and the team will win or lose depending on the skill of each player, not just one.

Once you start to see what each person is responsible for in the team, you can start to see what kind of strategic plays are being employed. Things such as players screening others to give a player a hassle free shot, positioning yourself correctly, all of these tactics become evident once you can recognize them for what they are. Once you can see the depth of strategy being employed, a suddenly simple game with a ball becomes a cerebral exercise. This is why there are stronger coaches that can lead teams to victory time and time again. It is not always just the players themselves.

At this point of learning the basics of the game you will move on to much more advanced concepts if you truly have developed an affinity for the sport. Supporting your own college gives you a sense of community and spirit that you rarely see. Even supporting your local professional team can pale in comparison to how much you will root for your own college team. You feel closer and more connected to your college team usually, as these are fellow students you may even have had a class with. Nothing beats the excitement of being in a crowd of other students and former students cheering on your college team, even if it’s from a televised game.

Learning the basics of the game will always lead you to enjoy the sport more once you watch basketball online.  Confusion as to what’s going on will only make you feel the game is dumb, that it’s not worth your time and focus, but once that is cleared away you will love it. Take the time to do it properly, and you will find yourself a lifelong fun activity to get into.
